An update on the story posted on loldarian.com earlier this week involving Today Show host Meredith Vieira and the cast of The Hurt Locker following their win for best picture.

Vieria immediately felt the backlash from some in the gay community who were offended by comments she made regarding a hug shared by actors Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner during their Oscar win last Sunday night.

"When the nominations were announced you hugged him pretty tight I must say in the moment", said Vieira. "There was a lot of man-loving going on last night as well. Do I have reason to be worried"?

Vieira insists no malicious intent and has since released a statement of apology via GLAAD:

“During an interview with the cast of the hurt locker on Monday, I turned to actor Anthony Mackie and made a joke about “man hugging” in reference to a hug he and fellow actor Jeremy Renner had shared a few weeks earlier on our air. It was meant to be lighthearted, but some were offended by what they believed to be a homophobic comment. That was never my intent, but that doesn’t matter. Words are extremely powerful and should never be chosen lightly, even in a lighthearted moment. I apologize to any and all that I offended. My support of the gay and lesbian community is longstanding and well documented. It has not and will never waver.”

I hope this will close the book on Meredith being looked at as another homophobic celebrity. She has been a gay allie for sometime whenever she's dealt with a gay issue. When celebrity aren't scripted there is a risk of comments being mis-interpreted. I think she handle her response to her critics with grace.
