Fenty signs same-sex marriage recognition bill





D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has signed a bill that would allow the District of Columbia to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.


Coming one day after City Council members voted 12-1 to back the bill, the mayor's signature Wednesday clears the way for the measure to go to Capitol Hill, where Congress will begin a 30-day legislative review of the measure as required under the D.C. City Charter.

'This campaign is for every person in every community in every part of our state, and it will empower our diverse community and allies to win marriage back together,' said Andrea Shorter, EQCA coalition coordinator. 'We will also enlist 1,000 clergy in the next 100 days to help spread the word that marriage equality is a spiritual value as well as a civil right.'





Cleveland Domestic Partner Registry Becomes Law Despite Protests from Black Ministers





Cleveland City Hall promises to be a busy place today, the first day that unmarried couples can sign up for the city's new domestic partner registry.Outside, supporters of the registry plan to celebrate with a rally from noon to 2 p.m. on the steps of City Hall. Inside, ministers who oppose the registry will kick off the National Day of Prayer with breakfast, music and prayers in City Council chambers.


Mothers of Bullycide Victims Carl Walker Hoover Jr. & Jaheem Herrera On Oprah





On April 6, 2009, 11-year-old Carl Walker-Hoover's family says he hanged himself after enduring bullying. Just 10 days later, 11-year-old Jaheem Herrera, another victim of bullying, took his own life, according to his family.


Carl's and Jaheem's mothers are speaking out in hopes that what they say happened to their sons will never happen to another child. "Today begins a national conversation on bullying," Oprah says.
