Living Out Loud with Darian

For my Broadway babies. The 63rd Annual Tony Awards aired last night and for the first time in years the entire show was entertaining from start to finish. Hosted by openly gay actor Neil Patrick Harris(How I Met Your Mother), the Tony Awards brought out the best of both stage and screen.


Black actor Roger Robinson of the hit revival Joe Turner's Come and Gone took home the coveted Tony trophy for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Bynum Walker in August's Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone.


Gay audiences may remember Robinson from his incredible performance in the 2004 film Brother to Brother as Bruce Nugent opposite Anthony Mackie.


Joe Turner's Come and Gone is currently running at the Belasco Theater on Broadway and was attended by the first couple, President and Mrs. Obama a couple of weeks ago to much media fanfare.


Another incredible black performer who was not nominated for her individual performance last night but shared the Tony for Best Revival of A Musical for HAIR was Sasha Allen. Allen's amazing voice is currently bringing down the house 8 times a week as Dionne in HAIR, but you may recall seeing her in the cult classic CAMP. The new revival of HAIR is worth seeing for Allen's performance alone.


Allen is in good company considering the amazing performers who originated roles in the original HAIR such as Charlayne Woodard and the late Nell Carter. If you're not into musical theater then you're missing out on a great theater experience and a totally gay production. Get into exactly what I mean in one of my favorite numbers from the 1979 film version of HAIR;Black Boys/White Boys and last night's Tony performance.
