The governor of New Hampshire on Wednesday signed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in the state, making the Granite State the sixth in the country to approve marriage rights for gay couples.
Before penning his name to the law, Gov. John Lynch (D) said the legislation would grant same-sex couples in New Hampshire the same rights afforded to opposite-sex couples in the state, according to the Boston Globe.
“Today we’re standing up for the liberties of same-sex couples by making clear they will receive the same rights, responsibilities and respect under New Hampshire law,” Lynch was quoted as saying.
“It is my hope and my belief that New Hampshire will once again come together to embrace tolerance and respect and to stand against discrimination.”

Today, after many votes and many revisions, New Hampshire will become the sixth state in the Union to offer marriage equality to all couples. After many rounds of votes, including full passage in both Houses of the Legislature May 6, then a vote on Governor Lynch’s required language that passed the Senate but failed to pass the House May 20, the revised bill passed today.
