The lives of LGBT people have been explored quite a few times recently in the media, from 20/20's story on transgender children, to the MSNBC special "Born In The Wrong Body", to the handful of victories across the nation for marriage equality, it seems Americans are more comfortable with images of LGBT people entering their homes and their lives.
Unlike years ago we have at least come to a place where we can talk about our differences openly with hopes of learning from each other. I'm often asked if I had the opportunity to become straight would I change my orientation and the answer to that question is no.
60 Minutes is currently running a story exclusively online on the origins of sexual orientation. The study even examines the differences in brain structure, mannerisms, and speech patterns between heterosexual and homosexual individuals, with all signs leading to nature over nurture. I've written about whether or not I think homosexuality is a choice before and it still baffles me when I hear heterosexuals boldly proclaim that it's a choice that can be easily undone without giving it a second thought. I'm still waiting for a hetero to tell me the day and time they chose to become straight...it hasn't happened yet. Truth be told (at least as I see it) your sexual orientation is indigenous to who you are.
This couldn't be more evident than in the case of nine year olds Jared and Adam, two paternal twins who couldn't be any more different. While Jared finds pleasure in his G.I. Joe collection his brother Adam paints his nails and collects Barbies. When Adam's mom was asked why she didn't do anything to change her son's behavior she replied, " I could have changed Adam on the outside and he may have shown me the macho boy I wanted him to be, but that wouldn't have changed him on the inside and I think that would have damaged him a lot more".
When Adam was asked if he was proud of the person he is today he responded by shaking his head yes as the most innocent and loving smile appeared on his face. Adam's attraction to the things that are deemed appropriate for the opposite sex is just as natural to him as his brother Jared's affection for his G.I. Joe collection. It saddens me that Adam may not gain the acceptance from the rest of the world as he matures that he does from his family. If only adults could love more and judge less the world would be a much nicer place.

@Darian: I always was on the nature side of this debate. Because with hetersexual realtions, tv shows, family, and etc , shouldn't everyone be nuture hetersexual. It clearly to me shows the nature side is dominated in a person's sexual orientation! I'm right with you, i ask some of my hetersexual friends to give me a year/month/day/time/seconds. Currently i haven't got a clear answer yet.
i agree with you about loving more and judging less! Christ taught non-judgment and love, but we have so-called Christians who look throughtout their book[ie.bible] to judge someone, and completely ignore that guideline! But it's no surprise, people just have to be judgmental, and critizing! Speaking of loving more, Darian, check out my post on this controversial black bishop that went from damning/ healing gays, to now loving and accepting gay men and women!

This is a nurture issue. The parents failed this young lad.
Although one of the boys paint his nails and collects barbie dolls, that is not to say he is automatically gay. He may very well grow up and be attracted to women. Nonetheless, the parents failed to show by example and to cultivate the essence of the "male" gender for this young lad.
Just think, would any parent tell their daughters they must play with trucks, take out garbage, pee standing up?
Can you provide me with an answer that homosexuality is natural? Where is the proof? Homosexuality is not the equivalent to heterosexuality.

@Captain: The mother is not making her son do ANYTHING that he isn't doing already. Just because his parents aren't forcing him to play sports or telling him to "Man Up" doesn't mean they have failed him.
And where is the proof that heterosexuality is natural for everyone? And if sexuality is a choice, are all straight people could choose to be gay.
But of course being straight is never a choice now is it?

You know what, (this is ground breaking news!) I am changing my position on this issue. I just remembered something...

@ Captain: There is enough of proof of how natural homosexuality is! You come here, and twist the word in your mind! Captian, i think anyone could care less if you change your position or not!
Homosexuality is equivalent to hetersexuality, whether you see that or not. This kid's parents has unconditional love for her son, and accepts however he naturally is and will become!
Captian, once again for the 10th time, you say you're out of the so-called lifestyle, but continue to visit black-gay blogs.Only gay, and gay-friendly people would do something like that, and you reject both. With 70% of black women single you need to nuture your new lifestyle[hetersexual???]. So why are you here???
May 17, 2007 8:27 PM
OK whiz kid, show me the proof. So far not ONE homosexual has provided any proof homosexuality is natural.
May 17, 2007 11:01 PM
@ Captian:OK OLD MAN, listen up real good! Here is part of the amounts of proof out there. Now since homosexuality is present throughtout the animal kingdom with hetersexuality. It's no surprise it's presents among human of all cultures, backgrounds, and races!
Now answer my questions: Since you're out of the so-called "lifestyle", then why aren't you nuturing that new lifestyle[hetersexual???] of yours? Why are you on black gay blogs?
May 18, 2007 4:11 PM
I've already answered those questions...read my blog.
May 19, 2007 11:31 PM
@ Captian: You did not answer my questions. You know don't worry about, i'm sure everyone including darian know why you come to our blogs, so forget it!
