According to Bilboard.com Janet Jackson's new release 20 Y.O. will debut at #2 on the Billboard top 200, with 296,000 albums sold in it's first week. Def Jam artist Ludacris will take the #1 position with 309,000 albums sold during it's first week of release.

Insiders claim that record executives at Def Jam intentionally priced Ludacris' album at $5.99 in order to secure him the number 1 spot because they knew with he and Janet releasing their albums on the same day he didn't stand a chance.

I think it goes without saying that 20 Y.O. is a great body of work, there's not too many cd's that you can listen to from beginning to end and 20 Y.O. is the exception. I'm just extremely dissapointed because I know this will give all of the Janet haters more amunition to attack her with, she is just as relevant today as she was 20 years ago when she released Control.

Why are people turning their backs on one of the greatest entertainers of all time? Did the superbowl stunt really cause all of this backlash? If so, why in the hell is Ms. Justin Timberlake on heavy rotation on MTV and his album at the top of the charts?

Has MTV forgotten who put their boring ass video show in the making on the map? It was Michael and Janet Jackson !The first MTV Icon was Janet JACKSON, now her presence on the network is invisible.

Janet is a living legend, and despite all of the unfair criticisim being thrown her way people are still anticipating her music and waiting to see what she'll do next, 20 years later.

yeah Darian i was pretty disappointed too, but look, without pop radio and mtv, janet did pretty good to get the number 2 spot, and dont forget she is #1 on R&B chart. no matter what people say she is an icon that cannot be touched. hate it if u want, the fact still stands that all the girls and guys out today would cut off there right hand to have a career like Janet Jackson. no she is not a singer like Mariah, but it does not take a voice like Mariah to be strong force in the music industry. Madonna and Janet has proven that and continues to prove it. they may not sell records like they use too, but the talent and respect will always be there, they will never be forgotten. (unlike some of the people out today.) Janet fans are like no other. So Go Janet, do your thang.

and the only reason why Justin is being played on radio and MTV is becuz he did what they wanted him to do by apologizing at the grammys and by not taking janet's side. Janet stood her ground. thats what Icons are made of.

Great body of work???? ARE YOU SERIOUS??????? Never could sing but she would manage to have some great songs and grooves but now the music has no edge...and those first two singles ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...That corny rap on Show Me is the worst ever.

Great body of work????? Are you serious. Aretha's "I Ain't Never Loved A Man" is a great body of work - Stevie's "Songs in The Key of Life" - Jennifer Holliday's debut CD! JJ never could sing and I mean NEVER! What she managed to do was to have great videos, great grooves, great production and songs! The problem with 20 y.o. is that it has no edge. The songs (including those lackluster singles) are so tired and corny even, as is the case with the embarrasing rap used in Show Me. It's now about her being relative or over 40, it's about her releasing a subpar cd....and girls who can't sing NEED GREAT MATERIAL.

Too funny! I mention Stevie, Aretha and Holliday and you come up with Beyonce! Lord! I'm not antiJanet, I have loved many of her recordings and especially, her VIDEOS. I'm a musician, so it's never been about her vocals for me. I also own all of her stuff (save for the very first 2), 20 year old just happens to be my least favorite....why do people compare her to Beyonce? I don't get it. They are 2 different types of performers. I think Knowles is more comparable to Michael, Sammy Davis and Diana Ross. Janet, I would put in the league with Madonna, Gwen Stafani and Brittney.

Wow, we got opinions going all over the place here. I hear folks comparing Janet and Beyonce to the likes of Aretha, Stevie, Jennifer Holliday...HOLD UP PEOPLE. When you make comparisons like that, you're talking apples and oranges.

Janet Jackson has an amazing career, as an ENTERTAINER. She and her producers have never marketed her as a singing powerhouse, and rightfully so. Ms. Jackson is considered an icon because of her amazing contributions to the entertainment industry (dance choreography, bringing female ownership of sexuality, etc.) And hello, have you ever been to one of this woman's concerts???? This chick puts on one hell of a show!

Dragging Janet through the mud by comparing her singing ability to SINGING powerhouses is quite unfair. That's like saying Aretha Franklin sucks as an entertainer because she can't bust out a dance break mid-song...that's not her thing. You'll never hear Janet release a CD of heart-wrenching, octave-scaling ballads because that's not what she's about.

So folks, let's appreciate the fact that Janet Jackson has been doing the DAMN thang in her own right for over 20 years, can still outperform some of these young chickens, and has accumulated a huge legion of dedicated fans.

I agree with many of you concerning the lack of attention and respect many vocally talented SINGERS receive in our mainstream music industry (it pisses me off to the NTH degree), but it does no good to knock the artists that thrive due to mainstream appeal, especially if they're damn good at what they do.

And by the way, 20 Y.0. IS a banger :)

Read carefully. No one compared Ms. Jackson's mannered whispers to the brilliant Aretha Franklin. That would be pointless. Janet's vocal facility is closer to that of Paula Abdul's. One of Ms. Franklin's CDs was mentioned as an example of a great body of work. Janet has also turned out some pretty good cds but in my opinion "20" is not one. I think it's her weakest effort as an adult.

I, too, was saddened to hear that 20 Y.O. did not top the charts. Janet deserved better... I am not wallowing in it though.

We all know that Janet is the premier performer of our generation... an icon... a force to be reckoned with.

Get ready for that tour Darian (by the way, I saw her at the Mariah Carey concert here in Vegas!!! Her seat was about 10 seats away from mine!!!!)
