Before their was RuPaul their was another diva that hailed from San Francisco by the name of Sylvester .

Recently I've found myself totally fascinated by his courage during an era where it was not socially acceptable to be black, gay, effeminate, and unashamed.

His amazing falsetto voice can be heard on dozens of disco tracks that kept the kids on the dance floor for hours.

I can remember the first time I heard his signature track"You Make Me Feel"(Mighty Real). I was blown away by the infectious beat and the unique sound that made Sylvester a star.

Unfortunately, in 1988 we lost Sylvester due to AIDS complications, but his music and legacy still lives on.

Take a moment and watch the clip above of Sylvester and his video for "You Make Me Feel".

Hey Darian. Do you know about my book about Sylvester (it came out last year, and then in paperback this year)? Let me know if you want me to send you a copy. Joshua Gamson (gamson@usfca.edu)
