Check out "SLOW" the latest short from filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe. SLOW is gaining quite a buzz on the independent film circuit and has been met with rave reviews and academic and moral critiques online. SLOW definitely has people talking.

The logline: 26yo, DDF, 5' 11", 185 fit. 7 cut. Vers. Looking to host now. 420 is cool. Send a face pic.

That pretty much sums up what the film is about. Or does it? Monroe leaves many unanswered questions at the end of the thirteen minute film and herein lies the beauty of it. Carlton Byrd and Harvey Gardner Moore star in this two person short film and also share writing credits with Monroe.

Get into the film below and be sure to let me know your thoughts. SLOW is NSFW and contains strong language and nudity.

WOW!!! I must admit that I was drawn in from the out of focus shot of the onion being washed all the way to the first chew. I liked the concept and the many questions that the piece posed. Questions that made sense once you pondered them and as the story unfolded. The title was very appropriate and resonated the plot and climax. The acting was superb, especially the actor that played the 'guest'. I admired that none of the characters were typical nor bland. Technically, I was impressed by the lighting and set design. It really enhanced the mood. Pardon me for going on but I was really moved by this piece. Hope to see more from you.

Nicely put together. It left me feeling sad. Hopeful as well, but mostly sad. I think many people feel that need for connection. Gay, straight, in relationships, business, friendships. It feels like we live in a world where we have to demand more than the superficial - or that's all we end up with.

I saw this film a couple of weeks ago and was moved by it and posted it blogs I'm associated with and every comment was the similar to the ones here. I found “Slow” sexy, thought provoking, intriguing, suspenseful, and alarming, an emotional roller-coaster ride I wanted to get out of but was sad when it had ended!

Hands down, this short film should be made into full out movie. I was really drawn into the characters and wanted to know the outcome. Do it.

Unfortunately, wanting a full feature Gay Black film to be made is a lot easier than done. It takes a lot of money, even for this 13 min piece to make. Beyond making it is the challenge of getting it distributed and even though it may have a strong black gay following it takes crossing over to a larger market for investors to consider putting their money behind it! Now that may sound pessimistic but I'm keeping it real.

A lot of films have had critical success through independent film festivals but have not been able to move beyond them. It took powerhouse icons Tyler and Oprah’s money to get "Precious" to a wider distribution. If you want to see “Slow” move to the next level you need to do some work. Gay Black films are still struggling even with adequate financing and wide distrbution. Please support Patrik-Ian Polk upcoming film "The Skinny", coming up Labor Day Weekend!

What I lacked in the ability to hear, I was able to follow the behavioral plot by watching close for the manifestation of the PROFILE took shake.

"Looking to host now. 420 is cool. Send a face pic."-Slow

Everything the guy that came over was doing was aggravating the blinded fellow because all the guy that came over wanted was to have sex. Him stripping down comes as no surprise especially since this guy assumes a dominant position and...and the host gives him the infamous line..."{the dooor} It's Open!!" He came in and turned on the music, never made EYE contact with the guy, which would've allowed him to realize the host was blind. He smoked because the Profile said that 420 a.k.a cannabis was cool. But the host wanted him to wait a while, SLOW down and ask or wait for him...since he is the host. Then the irony is, the blind guy wants a face pic but for what reason...he cant see it. But his profile pic is not of his face, but his abdomen. Maybe that is only suggesting that men looking for hookups online aren't interested in nothing else but the body. I am not surprised that he asked the guy to stay. Why am I not surprised? Because the host said he was looking to host now. He wanted company for dinner, after-all he did just cook. And somewhere in my imagination, I believe that he supposed that any guy that would come, meet him, and sit through dinner, would be someone open to receive him. This is why even we didn't see his eyes, only his behaviors; like getting the seasoning out of the cabinet and not looking and listening to the sound of what was in the bottles. The viewers saw his eyes just as the guest did, which was shortly after the tussle wherein he looked him in the face and asked why did he invite him over. And again, he invited him over for dinner.

This movie reminds us to take things S-L-O-W!

I was reading another blog, it all came to me about what this film meant in the sense of the gay black community and online hookups. For one a lot of us risk danger by blindly hooking-up with another person. We totally let our guards down not just for sex, but also for the feeling of not being alone and just having someone there. We let total strangers into our bedrooms and living rooms not knowing who they are or what they can be about. We write things on within our pages that we really don't mean (i.e. 420) just to see if we can get that "type" to come through, knowing that makes us comfortable. We should ever be so careful on what we're really seeking after... just be honest with the person and yourself. This is what I gathered....

I would love to hear the writer's intent. However, not knowing, it lands differently for each person. For me, it goes a deeper than what we physically saw. I saw it being about loneliness, hope, fear, wants, needs, silence, rejection, the dis-connect between strangers.

Just saw this at a film festival Friday night. It was pretty intense and left a lot of room for discussion and interpretation. The acting was great in not giving away too much. I'd love to see it in widespread distribution.
