Pop icon Janet Jackson kicked off the American Music Awards in a major way last night with a medley of hits from her latest release "Number Ones" including the new single "Make Me" during a 7 minute dance driven performance that was clearly one of the best performances of the night.

Janet may have her fair share of critics but her undeniable talent, stage presence, and longevity in the music industry is to be studied by the current divas in training.

Watch a living legend kill it at 43 years old in the clip below:

She has her haters but she rocked it and from what lil i did see of the show she was the best.

I will say though that she needs to dump Gil as her choreographer. He is dated and his stuff all looks the same.

I thought Janet did her thing....nobody can touch her showmanship...up and coming diva's need to take note....I have to co-sign the other writer's comment ..Gils moves don't always showcase Janet's abilities .....I would love to see her reteam with Tina Landon or Shawnette Heard ...(moves were more fluid, sexier ..but as far as her opening act I loved it...reminded me why after 20+ years we still "LIVE" for Ms Janet!

This clearly set the standards of the show- Janet is a living legend and clearly doesn't have to prove nothing to anybody- FIERCE!!!

Janet's performance was DEFINITELY one of the night's best. I would like to see her work with Gil and Fatima (or a female). She does need more sensuous moves to compliment her age. One more thing, I want sexy Janet back (in terms of costuming, that is).......
