What does it mean to be transgendered? How do you address an individual who is transitioning? You'd think that these would be easy questions to answer in our enlightened and evolved society, but when it comes to the transgender community many people don't know where to begin or what to think of people who are born in one body but later transitions to another that brings a sense of peace and wholeness-and this includes many within the gay and lesbian community.
Tracee McDaniel, a transgender female and Executive Director of Juxtaposed Center for Transformation Inc. in Atlanta recently sat down with Lonnell Williams, host of 3LWTV for a candid interview in which she addressed these very questions.
A longtime trans activist, McDaniel opens up about her 14 year marriage as a transgender woman in a heterosexual relationship, how to properly address a transgender individual, the different stages of transition, and where she is currently in her transition.
While gays and lesbians in the U.S. are benefiting from greater social acceptance, although there's still many challenges, the transgender community still faces increased stigma, employment discrimination, and are prone to more violent attacks based on their gender identity and presentation.
There definitely needs to be more education around trans issues within our community and definitely for the society as a whole. Get into Tracee's interview with Lonnell in the interview below and an appearance Tracee made on loldarian.com last year here.
