The ABC News Special "What Would You Do" is once again going undercover to find out just how tolerant people really are (or not) when it comes to displays of public affection between same-sex couples. You may remember reading a post on this blog last year about a similar experiment that took place in Birmingham, Alabama where a woman dialed 911 after witnessing a gay couple kissing on a park bench. This time ABC's cameras follow a real life couple into a sports bar in New Jersey to gauge the reaction of patrons towards same-sex affection. The reactions may surprise you.

This particular topic really gets under my skin. There's an obvious double standard when it comes to PDA between heterosexual and homosexual couples. In my line of work I've seen straight couples do everything but strip down and have actual intercourse, but if a gay couple is brave enough to simply hold hands in public they're accused of public indecency or "flaunting" they're sexuality. Not to forget that straight couples don't have to live with the fear of possibly being assaulted each time they have the urge to grab their partner's hand. In the words of Marvin Gaye- "Makes me wanna holler"!

Where do you stand on this issue? Be sure to check out What Would You Do when it airs tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.

I agree Kudos to ABC. I would have liked to see Black Gay couples represented. Although, i am pretty sure that I would know the reaction, however I think it would be good for the Black Community to see themselves in this situation.

Kudos to ABC...but I agree that this is a topic that gets my blood boiling. While it shouldn't be this way, reality is what it is. It takes a HUGE amount of courage and self-confidence to even admit you are gay, let alone SHOW the world. It's been my experience, and I'm sure we've all experienced, that when someone is bothered it's because they're insecure. The bad part is, when it comes to GLBT, we're in the minority so it doen't matter who's uncomforable with us. We're always in the wrong for what we express. One day....one day....I'm hopeful that will all change. --Off my soapbox now

I have always held the belief that you are entitled to do as you wish within your own space. However, looking at this from a sociology point of view, I feel it would be best if everyone should keep PDA to minimum or be more aware of surroundings. I would feel uncomfortable if a straight or gay couple are going at it on a plane or in a movie theater. There is a time, place and season for everything. I would also say that we should allow children to grow in innocence and not reveal such behavior publicly where they're likely to be around. Let them come into their sexual awareness in due time. I feel PDA would only arouse curiosity before it is time.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. I'm glad ABC chose to explore this topic, but I do agree with the earlier comments in that if it were a black gay couple, or a all black or minority bar, things might have been different ...
