As if Obama clinching the nomination last night wasn't enough to make me run around my apartment, I just received news that the California Supreme Court has refused a stay in their historic marriage equality ruling by a 4-3 vote.

Bottom line: On June 15th at 5 p.m. same-sex marriage will officially become legal in the state of California.

Lord what I would give to be a fly on the wall at the churches of Bishop Charles E. Blake and Rev. Fred Price right about now.

It's an amazing thing when equality and justice trumps bigotry.

The legislature has actually introduced a ballot initiative to effectively ban gay marriage in CA for the November election.

I wonder if the news media is going to report on how many WHITES vote in favor of the ban.

When I lived in Atlanta I worked with GA Equality to defeat the gay marriage ban amendment only to realize that OVER 70% of Georgians (mostly white)voted in favor of the ban.

Ironically, the core group of people who voted against the ban, outside of gays (black and white and other) were blacks and then whites. No one ever reported on that though.

So what strategy will you be able to implement that will curry favor with the legislative and judicial branches of various states, when both can effectively cancel each other out?

The Supreme court can keep overturning, but the legislature can keep writing bills and introducing state constitutional amendments.

blkseagoat: The "media" comments more about how many blacks are for or against gay/marriage rights because blacks complain the loudest about being discriminated against yet many blacks feel its OK to discriminate against/hate/kill gays. It is deeply ironic and the media RIGHTLY discusses it and, in my opinion, correctly so.

And I'm tired of so-called black gay activists defending straight black people against charges that they are more homophobic than other groups. Based on the MANY painful experiences I have had with straight blacks over the years, as a black gay man, I believe straight blacks ARE more bigoted against gays than other groups. If it's not true, let them defend themselves.

Do straight blacks EVER defend us OUT LOUD and IN PUBLIC? The energy and time some black gay activists, spokesmen, bloggers, etc., spend defending straight black people is energy and time wasted.

I say to black gay activists, spokesmen, bloggers, etc., don't defend straight black people. They don't need it. If you want to defend someone, defend the most voiceless and invisible of minorities - black gay people.

@ anonymous:

given how you have written your comment, i say "we meet yet again..." didn't you bring that "straight black people are whack" argument up once before? anywho...

Do straight blacks EVER defend us OUT LOUD and IN PUBLIC?

once again, a blanket statement. yes, we understand that in your experience this has occurred, but not every black SGL person has the same experience. and in fact, there have been some high profile people (i.e. entertainers) that darian has written about on this blog that do boldly support the SGL community. so i guess they don't count in your book? because they are "famous" and not the everyday average joe?

let me please ask...why do you assume that any one group of individuals should receive a public backing/support from another group? unfortunately, in this society many of us are quite self-absorbed and our attention is not always directed towards others. some of that is intentional and some of that is not. don't make the assumption that because someone doesn't publicly speak up for you means that they are homophobic or whatever. you have made it abundantly clear that your experiences have led you to these beliefs...we get that. but for goodness sake, at least admit that not everyone has those same experiences and stop thinking that your personal experiences can serve as a generalizations for EVERYONE else. sheeeesssshhhh
