During my visit to New York City last week I picked up a copy of Next magazine and came across a great interview featuring 41 year old Brian Tann and his 5 year old son Kai. Brian is a merchandising director in New Jersey and he also happens to be gay and the father of a very active kindergartener. It's not everyday I see images of single black gay men who are fathers, so to know that Brian and Kai exist and are bringing so much joy to each others lives reassures me that my dream of having a family is definitely possible.

The obvious question that most people want to know is how little Kai was conceived, this was Brian's response; "He was adopted in New Jersey at the age of two from a young mother that couldn't take care of him. She wanted someone to love him forever and I knew I could do that."

Do you think he knows that you're gay? "He knows his daddy is not like other daddies."

So what's a typical day like? "6am Coco Pebbles and Spongebob. Bath and school by 8:30am. Work until 5pm. Pick him up by 6pm. Dinner and homework by 7:30pm . 8:30pm bedtime.

What do you say to naysayers against gay parents? "I'm trying to save the life of one of the children you made."

So do you consider yourself a role model? I'm not, but my son is. He is showing the world how love can change your life.

Well I must say that I'm in love with this family. If you're a black gay or lesbian parent I would love to hear your story. Leave me a comment or e-mail me at darianoutloud@mac.com .

I find this highly disturbing.

Even with the comment from the "father" saying, "He [Kai] knows his daddy is not like other daddies", is a clear indication that gay men is inadequate in raising children, especially around a vile lifestyle.

Why gay men want to raise children so bad and want to look like a "family" is a mockery to the traditional institution of family. A group of two men or two women raising children will NEVER be considered a family.

Captain you took one line from his response and in your usual way you twisted it to mean something totally different than what Brian implied. He's not like other heterosexual dads because he's gay and unlike many fathers he's actually apart of his son's life.

I know it's hard for you to "swallow"(umm...maybe not) the fact that gay families exist, but they do so get over it ! Kai seems like a well adjusted child who has a father who loves him and that's more than enough. It's cruel and thoughtless "christians" like yourself that I worry about raising children.

How can you say Kai is "well adjusted" if there is a difference?

Either someone is doing right, or the rest of the fathers are doing wrong. Why is there a disparity?

Captain being straight doesn't guarantee you'll be a good father and being gay doesn't mean you'll be a bad one either. Surely a gay man will be far more sensitive to the needs of a child than a straight man who insists a child be a certain way. It takes a village and several influences in a childs life to make them a well rounded human being. Extended family also plays a big part! Who's your daddy? lol

@Captain: I find YOU highly disturbing!

You just can't say anyting nice about any gay-related issues. Such as gay parenting. You say a mockery to "traditional family"? I don't know what tradition but things change as time go on. I really don't know why self-hating gays like to promote a right-wing agenda that is a threat to America.

What lifestyle? It simply means the way a person lives. And everybody does NOT live the same way! You love the term "vile". You really need to stay from under Paul's robes [bible].

As many sociologists have research that there is NO difference in straight or gay parents. Children grow up just fine, and healthy.
This man is single who happens to be gay, and raising his son. If it was a straight man, would we hear your homophobic gay self with negative comments? NO, and you know it! Anything gay is like a wet towel slapping you on the ass, you love it, and you just can't leave it alone! But that's how these "professional hetersexuals"[still gay] are! I wish brian and kai the best and many more!

INJUSTICE MH- You didn't answer the question. Lastly, you mentioned that Sociologist found there is "no difference", then why did the father say that Kai knows that his father is not like other daddies?

I mean, if there is no difference, then why did the gay man make such a statement?

Next time, stick to the issue, not me, as I am not the subject matter here.

@Captain: The answer is this kid is learning that there are straights and gays. Some parents are straight and some are gay. When Kai gets a little bit older, he will understand much more of how the world is diverse with different people. Kai knows he has a father[parent] who cares and loves him.

AS for you, this is a blog like mines that present gay material. Only gays, and gay-friendly people visit. You should really get a award for being the MOST homophobic homosexual for 2007. You, alan chambers, charlene cothran, stephen bennett and michael galtze are my nominees for 2007 as the most homphobic homosexuals. Enough about you. Best wishes Brian and Kai and many more!

It is a very sad reality our children have to worry about the sexual disparities of their guardians and parents at such an early age and learn of the immorality we are allowing to penetrate to the heart of America.

We (America) is known for moral right-standing, justice, peace and liberty. We are living in a sad time and in a prideful and risky generation that will cause America to lose favor and grace with God because of the allowance to change the natural course of family, promoting vile sexual behaviors as normal, and placing children in the charge of GLBT people that hate God, sick in body and mind, with no conscience of morality, only to corrupt our posterity and planting their seeds of wickedness for the next generation. This cannot be allowed...corruption must be stopped.
